Somatic Health Issues

Do you have headaches, back pain, gastrointestinal issues, cardiac issues, and/or other somatic complaints?

Do you have anxiety, depression, and excessive stress that influences wellness of your mind and body?

Do you feel a need to incorporate stress management techniques such as mediation, mindfulness, breathing activities, exercise, and time in nature?

What are somatic issues?

Somatic health issues include bodily symptoms that may surface due to long term difficulties in dealing with daily stressors, often thought of as a default stress response. In time a lack of self-care, together with the possibility of emotional and psychosocial contributions, can lead to physical ailments.

For some individuals a presentation of physical ailments surface due to one’s cultural beliefs on suppressing emotional distress, in which emotional and psychosocial issues may come forward as physical symptoms.

Common physical symptoms may include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Cardiac issues
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Headaches, back pain, temporal mandibular joint (TMJ-jaw) issues
  • Fibromyalgia

These symptoms may be associated with:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Sleep difficulties/insomnia
  • Grief
  • Difficulties with stress management

What interventions can be helpful?

Mind-body therapies can be beneficial, together with medical intervention if necessary, and a variety of psychotherapy approaches. This requires a collaborative approach between the client and the therapist in movement forward towards wellness. Exploration of the mind and body as one entity can be assistive and may be termed somatic psychotherapy.

How long does therapy take for somatic issues?

Somatic issues are often the result of chronic issues that led to somatic complaints. Therefore, time may be needed in exploration in therapy, adaptation and application of stress management strategies, and possible changes in lifestyle. The amount of sessions required depends on an individual’s physical and psychosocial/emotional well-being, and the client’s involvement in their self-care. These services are collaborative, with the therapist and client working closely together towards the client’s goals.
