Ivona Bhadha is a licensed psychotherapist who connects deeply with her clients through compassion and mindful attunement to their personality and emotional experience. Ivona creates a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship, and gently guides individuals, couples and families through life’s problems and transitions.
Ivona completed her master’s degree in Social Work in Slovakia and continued her studies and clinical internships in substance abuse counseling and social work in the United States. Ivona is licensed as social worker in both Florida and New York. She has 9 years of experience in providing therapy to individuals, groups, and families with addictions, codependency, and loss and grief issues.
Ivona’s therapy practice includes the prevention and treatment of depression and anxiety. One of her talents includes working with codependency and addictions from a family perspective. She helps clients put together the puzzle of their original emotional attachments (from childhood) and their current relationships.
Ivona’s philosophy is to empower clients to “take the oxygen mask first” — which means taking care of yourself first, rather than “fixing the other person.” Ivona helps women and men to uncover their own strengths and self-soothing capacities that enable healthy coping. Integrating mindfulness based therapy and neuroscience studies Ivona teaches clients to take their own “emotional pulse” and respond more harmoniously to stressors and emotional turmoil. Ivona uses humanistic, dynamic and experiential therapy with the focus on attachment style and emotional expression.
Ivona has a special interest in treating survivors of narcissistic abuse. This emotional abuse by narcissistic parents, and/or adult relationship partner, results in emotional wounds and a loss of self. Narcissistic abuse may happen when people don’t want to lose this relationship battle, and continue to provide a “narcissistic supply” of attention to an abuser. Ivona guides clients through a recovery process that promotes personal empowerment, a strong sense of self, and healthy, stable relationships. Ivona helps clients to build safe boundaries, and empowers them when a “relationship detox” is necessary.
Ivona is skilled in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy — a unique approach that combines the practice of mindfulness meditation with changing negative thoughts to help relieve anxiety, depression, substance abuse, emotional eating, multi-task stress, obsessive thinking and relationship challenges.
Ivona suggests this major benefit of therapy: “We can’t stop the waves but we can learn to surf.” Ivona believes that psychotherapy provides tremendous opportunity to challenge our self-limiting comfort-zones, along with a great potential for positive change and personal growth. Most important is the healing experience of feeling safe and seen, comforted and connected.
Ivona is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) therapy — an integrative psychotherapy approach proven by research to be effective in the treatment of trauma and post-traumatic stress. The studies show a high degree of effectiveness for other conditions including anxiety, childhood trauma, physical and sexual abuse, situational depression, low self-esteem, performance and test anxiety.
The EMDR technique does two important things: First it “unlocks” the negative memories and emotions stored in the nervous system, and second, it helps the brain successfully process the experience.
