Greg Douglas is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who specializes in trauma recovery (resulting from childhood abuse, abandonment, and other traumatic experiences), relationship issues and couples therapy, and the unique and important field of sports performance. His specialties also include anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and addictions. Greg works with individuals of all ages including children, couples and groups.
Greg’s counseling philosophy is based on unconditional acceptance of self and others. He believes that we develop patterns of behavior during childhood that serve us well and help us to cope with challenges in life. Personal growth evolves with insight about these patterns, as we make new, healthy choices. Our unique experiences have shaped our lives, and Greg’s approach promotes healing and growth in a safe and supportive environment. His integrated counseling approach includes proven methods such as EFT (see below), Solution Focused Brief Therapy, EMDR (below), REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy), and Motivational Interviewing.
EFT – Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy is the state-of-the-art in couples therapy. Studies show that EFT is the most effective type of marriage counseling and therapy for couples. In EFT, couples identify relationship patterns (the “dance”), and the underlying feelings and unmet needs that drive the dance. Greg specializes in helping couples to create loving partnerships. In his work with couples, Greg also addresses parenting issues, including the unique challenges faced by blended families (families that include children from a prior marriage or partnership).
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) allows clients with childhood trauma (abuse and/or abandonment) and PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder) to reprocess traumatic memories in a safe, supportive environment. This brief therapy helps people to remove negative emotions, thoughts and beliefs that can remain present for years after a traumatic event. EMDR helps people to identify and use their personal power to increase confidence and cope more effectively with life’s difficulties. Greg also specializes in the area of sports performance. Greg has an extensive background in athletics. He was highly ranked when he competed nationally in the American Junior Golf Association. He then attended Kansas State University on a golf scholarship. Greg has continued his competitive athletic career as a tennis player, and currently competes in local, state and national tournaments. His extensive experience in competitive athletics has resulted in a unique perspective on training the mind as well as the body to perform at the highest level. Greg believes in training athletes to focus on the process of improvement, regardless of the outcome, which unlocks each person’s true potential for athletic mastery. This philosophy and approach can also be applied to other challenges in life, such as career and relationship goals.
Greg earned his mental health counseling degree (M.Ed.) from Florida Atlantic University. He also completed advanced training in EMDR. Greg’s clinical experience includes working with clients of all ages in the fields of addictions and dual diagnoses.
