What is craniosacral therapy (CST) and somato-emotional release (SER)?
Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a manipulation and mobilization technique to improve musculoskeletal dysfunction, enhance health, improve brain and spinal cord function, reduce accumulated stress, and enhance wellness. CST utilizes the craniosacral system (head to bottom of spine, possessing the brain and spinal cord), and includes the fascia (a connective tissue surrounding bone, muscle and organs). CST influences the musculoskeletal, nervous, vascular, lymphatic, endocrine, and respiratory systems. In CST one views the body as a puzzle, exploring all that influences the presenting problem. The therapist addresses the source of the problem(s), which in turn affect the symptoms.
Somato-emotional release (SER), involves the therapist’s facilitation of the client to explore aspects of the body that may be holding emotional, psychological, or spiritual qualities. This is utilized in CST at times when the body’s tissues are immobile and/or tight and are having difficulties with movement or change. The body can store residue emotional and psychological aspects that can influence immobility in the body. This is explored collaboratively with the therapist and client in a gentle, non-intrusive manner very similar to the hypnotherapy process. This allows an awareness that can assist in change of patterns, facilitating some type of shift or release. This assists in physical, emotional, and psychological change towards wellness.
Who can benefit from craniosacral therapy and somato-emotional release (including but not limited to)?
How long does craniosacral and somato-emotional release take?
Craniosacral therapy and somato-emotional release requires attention to each client in their unique circumstances. An initial session is 90 minutes and follow up sessions are 60 minutes. The amount of sessions required depends on an individual’s physical and psychosocial/emotional well-being, and the client’s involvement in their self-care. These services are collaborative, with the therapist and client working closely together. Depending on the client’s participation and level of care needed, sessions can range from 1 to 5 (or more if necessary).
