Why do we have so much anxiety, and where does it come from?

Anxiety generally refers to feelings of fear, nervousness and various types of tense physical feelings. Worry is closely associated with anxiety. Worry is negative thinking about the future — often with a sense of anxiety or dread. When anxiety becomes excessive, it can lead to an anxiety disorder with panic attacks and phobias. OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) is an extreme form of worry (obsessive rumination) that also includes repetitive compulsive behaviors. Distressing anxiety and worry include the following experiences:

  • Feeling tense, restless, or nervous
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Insomnia or restless sleep
  • Feeling edgy or irritable
  • Feeling physically agitated — muscle tension
  • Racing thoughts — excessive worry and rumination

These feelings and experiences could indicate the presence of an anxiety disorder — or they may simply result from stress and life circumstances. Some people are more prone to anxiety and worry due to an inherited disposition, personality style or childhood experience. Anxiety and worry are a part of the normal human condition. When these feelings and experiences become too distressing or last too long, help is available.
